On May 17, the reporter learned from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology that at the 5G/6G special conference held by the Ministry, China's 5G development has achieved a leading edge, with 280 million terminal users connected to 5G mobile phones, accounting for more than 80% of the world's total, and the number of 5G standard necessary patent declarations ranks first in the world.

This time, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology listened to the report of experts from IMT-2020 (5G)/IMT-2030 (6G) Promotion Group on the progress of 5G and 6G work, so as to study and promote the work related to 5G and 6G development.

The meeting proposed that 5G and 6G, as the important direction of the evolution and upgrading of the new generation of information and communication technology, are the key information infrastructure to realize the interconnection of all things, and the important driving force for the transformation and upgrading of the economy and society. The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology will organize all forces of industry, education, research and use, closely deploy and promote as a whole, so as to promote the development of 5G and 6G in China to achieve positive results.

It was reported at the meeting that with the joint efforts of the industry, China's 5G development has gained a leading edge, with the number of 5G standard necessary patent declarations accounting for more than 38%, rising nearly 5 percentage points since the first half of last year, ranking first in the world. At the same time, China has built more than 819,000 5G base stations, accounting for about 70% of the world.

In this regard, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology clearly proposed that China should continue to maintain its strategic focus and continue to promote the rapid and healthy development of 5G.

Specifically, MIIT will promote this work from three aspects. The first is to continue to strengthen the formulation of international standards, encourage the industry to participate in R17 and R18 international standardization, and actively contribute to China's wisdom and China's programs.

Secondly, we will continue to improve the basic capabilities of the industry and the modernization level of the industrial chain, strengthen the advantageous industries such as systems and terminals, complement the weaknesses of chips and instruments, and vigorously promote the optimization and upgrading of all links of the industrial chain.

Finally, we should focus on building an integrated application ecology, pay attention to application technology innovation, promote the integration and development of 5G with artificial intelligence, big data, cloud computing and other technologies, break through the key technologies and products that restrict the large-scale application of 5G such as network slicing and modules, deepen the application of 5G in industries, transportation, medical care, energy and other fields, and form a replicable and promotable model as soon as possible.

The meeting also affirmed the achievements of China's IMT-2030 (6G) Promotion Group since its establishment in 2020, saying that it has formed a number of important research achievements in the areas of 6G vision needs, potential key technologies, etc.

The meeting held by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology also requires the IMT-2030 (6G) Promotion Group to further plan ahead, strengthen research and promote the development of 6G with steady progress.

Specifically, the first step is to conduct in-depth research on 6G application scenarios. On the basis of the existing 5G, research and propose the vision needs and application scenarios of the future 6G in combination with technological evolution and economic and social development trends.

The second is to focus on promoting key technological innovation and breakthroughs. Focusing on 6G potential technologies such as terahertz communication, integration of communication perception, and integration of communication and artificial intelligence, we will actively plan, make forward-looking deployment, and lay a solid foundation to strive for major breakthroughs in key core technology fields.

Finally, we should actively promote international exchanges and cooperation.
